The blogger and journalist Sacha Lobo on the refugee camp Moria on Lesbos, Greece, which burned down a few days ago. He blames not only Horst Seehofer, but also and above all Angela Merkel and the EU for the inhuman refugee camp that was built. We reproduce here Sacha Lobo’s comment literally.
What happens in Moria and what has Angela Merkel got to do with it?
First the basic facts:
Moria is the largest refugee camp in Europe, on the Greek island of Lesbos. It is designed for about 2800 people, but at times more than 20,000 refugees were crammed into it. A few days ago there were still more than 13.000 people, more than fourfold overcrowding and 4000 of them are children. Some time ago Coroana also broke out there. Of course it is, with the catastrophic hygienic conditions and that is why the refugees are not allowed to leave the area since March.
Many people don’t know this, but the camp is about the size of six football fields and it gets even worse when you calculate the population density of Moria, in inhabitants per square kilometer. Germany is quite densely populated and has about 240 inhabitants per square kilometer. But it is also a country. A bustling city like Berlin still has 4000 inhabitants per square kilometer. In Morea, no joke and no miscalculation, 260,000 people per square kilometer live. That is about the same as if Berlin had 230 million inhabitants and most of them without running water and without electricity.
In plain language this means: Moria is hell! And the crass thing is, it is an intentional hell. A hell of the EU and of Angela Merkel.
And now, Moria is burnt down! Burned down with 13.000 homeless people resulting from it. Why don’t you just take them in? The EU is big and has taken in over a million refugees in 2015. The reason is a shame and it is Angela Merkel’s shame.
Many people are now complaining in the social media about Horst Seehofer, because he personally blocked the reception of refugees. And without any doubt Horst Seehofer is a rather cynical, misanthropic “scumbag”. But he is a “dirtbag” by the grace of Angela Merkel. He can only block in the first place because Angela Merkel allows it. For there is the so-called guideline competence of the chancellor. This means that if she really wants to, Merkel can decide everything and the ministers have to follow her.
But Merkel doesn’t want to, and this is what happens: there are many people, especially conservatives, who believe that the so-called pull effect exists. That means that if you treat refugees too well, then more will come. Even if that were technically correct, which it actually can be, then a whole new drama results.
In Moria all possible basic rights are deliberately ignored. Morea is intentionally made hell by the EU, so that fewer refugees come to Europe. Moria is the worst guerilla advertising campaign against migration you can imagine. The EU is counting on Morea being so bad that everyone there is talking: It is not worthwhile to flee. That is the strategy of the EU! And is a super-angular, misanthropic strategy.
This strategy of the EU’s own hell, by the way, is supported by Angela Merkel. For fear of the right-wing governments in Europe. For fear of the AfD. For fear of the conservative part of the CDU/CSU, who think that you can let a few people die for a great advertising campaign against migration. So that one does not have to concern oneself with the migration problem further.
And that has nothing to do with the general position towards migration. One can have very different attitudes with many different, also good reasons. But here we are talking about the last remnants of human dignity and the lives of 13,000 people and also the last remnants of the values on which the EU is actually built.
I repeat once again: Scold Horst Seehofer for all I care, but all this is happening under the responsibility of Angela Merkel. She could snap her finger and tomorrow there would be nobody left in Moria. But she doesn’t do it, for political reasons and to keep the right-wing “knalldackel” in her team quiet. That is the bitter truth!
The well-being of Horst Seehofer, the well-being of all Horst Seehofers, is more important to Angela Merkel than 13,000 people in hell.
You have to remember that the next time you murmur approvingly from the left that Angela Merkel is actually not doing her job so badly.
